By car

Lefkada is the only island accessible by car, without the cost of a ferry. It is connected to the Akarnanian mainland by a floating pontoon for a constant flow of vehicle traffic, and is also a swinging bridge. The Rion-Antirion suspension bridge, as well as the Aktion tunnel under the sea make access to the island much easier. Likewise, the new road axes Igoumenitsa-Alexandroupoli, Egnatia Odos Motorway, makes the journey from Northern Greece and Thessaloniki faster and easier. In progress is the construction of the Ionia Odos motorway which will reduce the travel time to and from Antirio and will be linked to the Egnatia Odos motorway. A part of this new motorway is ready and available to public.

By bus

There are five departures daily from/to Athens (378 km) by coach (KTEL of Lefkada) which cost 33,80 euros and twice weekly from/to Thessaloniki (420 km) which cost 35,40 euros. It takes about 5 hours and a half to arrive to the island from Athens and 5 hours from Thessaloniki. There are also regular itineraries from/to Igoumenitsa (115km) which take about 1 hour and a half to Lefkada and they cost 12,20 euros and also two scheduled trips from/to Patra (187km) which are 2 and a half hours away and they cost 16,20 euros. The ticket from/to Preveza costs 2,70 euros.

By Ship

Coastal link with Lefkada is not directly possible. The visitors can be assisted through the port of Igoumenitsa and then continue by road (95 km away). Alternatively there is the port of Patras (distance 176 km).

By Boat

One of Lefkada’s most recent acquisitions is the marina, the most modern in Greece, situated on the east side of the town. Its mooring capacity is for 620 boats and its buildings comprise a control tower, a multi-purpose building, sailing club offices, a complex of offices and shops, a small hotel, a boat repair and maintenance facility, parking for 455 cars, winter mooring for 300 boats, a road network and a green belt. It has a 1700 metre - long breakwater and 940 metres of floating wharfs. It is a town within the town of Lefkada with its own life, bars and restaurants also frequented by non boat - owners to enjoy its comforts and the picture of the liquid mirror of the channel reflecting the rosy fingers of the sunrise and the mystique of the moonlight.

Flights from/to Aktion airport

The airline Sky Express executes weekly itineraries connecting Aktion airport (Lefkada/Preveza) to the following domestic destinations: Sitia (Crete), Kythera, Zante, Kefalonia and Corfu. During the summer months there are direct flights to Aktio airport from several European cities.

Flights from Athens to Lefkada

For the time being there are no flights from Athens (El.Venizelos airport) to Aktio (Lefkada/Preveza airport). From May 1, 2016 until October 29, Aegean will launch a flight from Athens to Aktion Airport, every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday at 20:45 and back on the same days at 22:10 from Aktion. If you fly to Athens there is a bus X93 (formerly E93 by OASA company) connecting the El. Venizelos Airport (door 5) with Teminal A, the Athenian bus terminal at Kifisos(100 Kifisou street). The interval is generally 35 minutes (65 at night). From Kifisos bus terminal there are 4 daily itineraries to Lefkada KTEL bus company.

How to get to Lefkada from Aktion airport

There is bus connection (route Lefkada - Preveza) as well as taxi available. You can also rent a car from one of the travel agencies at the airport.

Lefkada (or Lefkas, Levkas, Leukade) is at the centre of the Ionian Islands off the western coast of Greece, between Corfu and Kefallonia. Lefkada Town

The coast road (Angelou Sikelianou), with its cafes and bars thronged with crowds in the evening, the alleys with the typical wooden houses built to withstand earthquakes, panelled in coloured corrugated sheeting and the pedestrian walkway of Ioannou Mela – Dörpfeld, where besides the shops, cafes and tavernas you will catch a glimpse – even if only the outside – of some of the town’s grandest churches. And do not miss a visit to the town’s Archaeological Museum and to the modern yacht marina. Near the town: the fort of Aghia Mavra, the lagoon, the closest beaches - of the Castle; of Gyra; of Mili with sensational kite surfing; of Ai Yiannis; and of Kryoneri below the Stavros estate – and the Monastery of Faneromeni also called ‘Lady of Lefkada’, the islanders’ patron, built in a site with magnificent view.

West

Aghios Nikitas: a charming seaside village just 12 km from town. The beaches Pefkoulia; Mylos; Kathisma; Engremni; Porto Katsiki: these prize-winning beaches are known all over Europe for their beauty, their turquoise waters, towering rocks and white sand, expecting you every summer. The scenery is just as beautiful at other seasons especially early in summer or late in autumn to enjoy it with exclusiveness.

East

Lygia: some of the island’s best known tavernas are in its little harbor and a stop for a meal is worth the experience. Nydri: this was the first area to be developed for tourism, mainly because it is opposite Onassis’ island Skorpios. Even if you are not fond of places with a lot of people, a walk in the harbour is worth it for the view and you might take an excursion on one of the little boats that cruise round the environs and into the islands of Meganisi, Kalamos and Kastos. The waterfalls of Dimosari: located in a glory of greenery into a path of beauty and freshness, the landscape here has been hymned by Aristotelis Valaoritis, who admired it from the little island opposite, Madouri.

South

Vassiliki: this beach is the paradise of surfers. Close by, you will find Aghiofili, one of Lefkada’s best beaches but not very well known. Syvota: A delightful fishing village on the bay of the same name and a favourite mooring for yachtsmen. Cape Lefkatas of Niras (or Kyras): a ‘borderline point’ with a grandiose view, it arouses primitive feelings – especially if you are there at dusk or dawn.

Interior

The highland villages: the principal village of Karya stands out, with many tavernas, and an interesting Folklore Museum, and worth seeing also are the villages of Alexandros, Kolyvata and Drymonas for their well preserved or ruined stone houses in the neighbourhoods. The Monastery of Kokkini Ekklisia and the Monastery of Asomatou Archangelou Michail: they are both abandoned now, but traces remain of their onetime heyday and wealth of history. Faraggi tis Melissas: this ravine is crisscrossed with footpaths, recently marked, going by water mills, stone bridges, wells and a wealth of foliage. The plateau of Englouvi: an area with a wild beauty of another world that must be seen, this is where the renowned Englouvi lentils are cultivated, and where you can visit the church of Aghios Donatos, and the ‘voltos’, low vaulted stone constructions unique in Greece. If you walk up to the chapel of Prophitis Ilias, you will enjoy an uninterrupted view in all directions of the horizon.
